![]() The DBH article breaks that down a little bit more, but this story is clearly using a religious cosmology which is based on Jewish tradition but does not reflect the typical Heaven/Hell dichotomy modern Christians usually use. The two destinations are Hades and Abraham’s Bosom. Which brings up another point, keep in mind that the words “Heaven” and “Hell” are not used in this story at all. Jesus flips that story on its head, and the pious man is in Hades while the other man is taken to Abraham’s Bosom. If I remember right, the general idea is that in the original story, the pious man is in heaven in the end and the non-religious man is suffering in Hades. I’ve also heard some Christian Universalists like Robin Parry point out that this story is a reworking of a common Jewish parable/fable of some sort, but unfortunately I’ve never found anything too concrete on that. It’s probably not going to change anyone’s opinion who is fully convinced of eternal conscious torment, but his interpretation of the “vale” of Abraham is really interesting and thought provoking.
